IL PARADISO DELLA PERLINA E PRIMI ACQUISTI

Ieri avevo concluso il post anticipandovi l’argomento di oggi: una sorta di piccolo “tempio delle perline” scovato qui a Berkeley. In realtà non è che abbia scoperto l’acqua calda, perchè a quanto pare questo luogo è piuttosto famoso, e a ragion veduta direi.

Yesterday I finished the post saying you something about today's theme: a sort of beads temple, found here in Berkeley. Really, I didn't find anything special because this place seems to be quite popular, and I can understand why!

Premetto che nell’ultimo periodo il mio modo di creare è cambiato molto e che quindi l’interesse che un tempo avevano questo genere di luoghi si è modificato a sua volta. 

Se una volta le “perline” rappresentavano la mia primaria fonte di gioia creativa, ora le cose sono diverse e quindi il motivo per cui mi sono recata in questo posto, che ora vi vado a presentare, è stato piu’ che altro legato all’esigenza di procurarmi della minuteria metallica di buona qualità, che mi serviva per alcuni lavori che ho in corso. 

I state that in the last period my way of creating has changed a lot, then the interest that I had for this kind of places, now is quite different.

If once, beads were my first source of creative joy, today things are different, and then the reason why I went in the place that I 'm going to introduce you, is that I needed some metal stuff of good quality for some important orders that I have to finish.

Appena arrivata a Berkeley ho fatto la classica ricerca su Google “beads in Berkeley” e il primo link è stato proprio relativo a questo posto. Ci sono andata pochissimi giorni dopo anche perchè è abbastanza vicino a casa mia.

As soon as I arrived in Berkeley I did the classic research on Google: beads in Berkeley. The first result was about this place. I went there after few days also because it's quite close to my home.

Il posto è davvero incredibile: un tempio della perlina e di tutto cio’ che ci gira attorno.

Pietre dure, vetro, minuteria, clay, wire, lastre metalliche, fogli metallici, cristalli, argentone, charms...pensate ad una delle tante tecniche di questo mondo...ebbene lì troverete tutto l’occorrente, dal peyote, al wire...tutto. 

La quantità di attrezzi disponibili è impressionante. 

Mai visto nulla di simile in un negozio con vendita al dettaglio.

Il personale poi: tutte ragazze giovanissime e super esperte. 

In questo luogo il “beading” non è solo un hobby, ma una cosa seria, da trattare con cura e professionalità. 

The store is really incredible: a beads temple and of all that concern it.

Semiprecious stones, glass, small metal things, clay, wire, metal plates, crystals, silver, charms...think about a technique of this incredible world, you'll find all the stuff here! From peyote to wire...anything!

The choice of tools is great! I've never seen something like this in a store opened to private public. 

The store staff: all young ladies very professional! 

In this place the beads are not only a hobby. It's a serious thing and you have to treat it kindly and professionally.

Come vi ho anticipato il mio scopo era essenzialmente legato alla minuteria, quindi mi sono controllata moltissimo. 

In generale ho trovato i prezzi buoni, non per me pero’. Di solito comprando all’ingrosso pago molto meno, ma si fa di necessità virtu’ e quindi ho comprato solo le cose che mi servivano con urgenza. 

In generale, pero’, ripeto, parlando di prezzi al dettaglio, ho trovato che fossero buoni e adeguati alla qualità elevata. 

As I told you before my purpose was to find some good metal stuff and so I took a great self control during my visit...I didn't want to spend to much money.

Generally I found good prices but not for me. I use to buy things in great quantity because of my job and I can spend less money...but anyway I needed that stuff and I get it.

But generally, again, talking about details prices, they are really good in comparison with the great quality  of the components.

Non ho comprato perline o simili, per ora, ma ci tronero’. 

Ho acquistato solo una bustona di perle in vetro, tipo indiane.

I didn't buy beads or something like this, except for a great plastic bag full of glass indian style beads.

I will return to buy more.

Non ho  acquistato altro perchè avevo in progetto di andare a San Francisco dopo qualche giorno, a China Town, dove sicuramente avrei trovato pietre dure e altre cosette a prezzi migliori. 

E così è stato. 

I didn't buy other things because I had the idea to go to San Francisco after few days, in China Town, where surely I could have found semiprecious stones and other little things with a better price.

And so it has been.

Se vi capitasse mai di fare un saltino da queste parti, una volta oltrepassata la porta d’ingresso al quartiere (qui sopra), tenete d’occhio i primi 3 o 4 negozi di gioielleria sulla sinistra. 

Io in uno di questi ho trovato, verso il fondo del negozio, dei sacchettini pieni di bellissime perle di fiume e pietre dure sfuse, anche bellissime perle cloisonnè, tutte spaiate ma davvero stupende a ottimo prezzo. 

If one day you will be here around, once you have passed the entrance monumental door (in the picture ), take a look to the first stores on your left.

In one of these I found interesting little plastic bags full of semiprecious stones and other interesting beads.

Bellissimi i pesci cloisonnè. Li avevo già visti in altri posti ma così piccini no..

Diciamo che la mia prima ricognizione mirata ha portato i suoi frutti. 

In realtà la vera magia è avvenuta ieri grazie all’incontro con uno dei posti piu’ incredibili che io abbia mai visto...ma di questo vi parlero’ piu’ avanti. 

Domani cerchero’ di approfondire il discorso di oggi, non tanto rispetto ai posti ma quanto rispetto a dove fare acquisti vantaggiosi, in che modo orientarsi sui prezzi e così via...una sorta di manualetto che magari vi puo’ essere utile. 

We can say that the first exploration has been very good!

Really I have to say that the real magic has happened yesterday thanks to the meeting with one of the most incredible places I have ever seen in my life...but I will talk about this in the next days.

Tomorrow I will try to go deeper inside the theme of beads shopping: where to find interesting things, how you can valuate the prices an so on... a sort of little manual that I hope it will be useful.

Da dove comincio?

Dall’inizio sarebbe la cosa migliore, ma credo basti iniziare da dove mi trovo ora, perchè il resto è fin troppo personale e rischierebbe di essere anche un po’ noioso.

Bene. Cominciamo.

Cari tutti, 

da oggi per un po’, questo blog servirà ad ospitare una sorta di diario di viaggio: una raccolta di appunti e spunti ricavati durante queste giornate lontana dall’Italia.

Ed ecco dove mi trovo.

Sono a Berkeley in California, molto vicino a San Francisco, per intenderci.

Forse la maggior parte di voi la ricollega all'arcinota università, ed effettivamente è così. Berkeley è sede di una delle piu' importanti università del mondo. Ma non è tutto. Qui sono nati alcuni dei piu' significativi movimenti di protesta in favore della libertà di parola, dei diritti delle donne... . Tanto per fare un esempio, i figli dei fiori, sono figli di Berkeley. Forse alcuni di voi ricordano Forest Gump e la "sua Jenny" che di bianco vestita, si unisce alle proteste pacifiste di un gruppo di studenti: ecco loro venivano proprio da qui. 

Ma Berkeley è in realtà inserita in un'area dall'incredibile intensità culturale: qui attorno, a San Francisco nello specifico, è nata, tanto per fare un ultimo ulteriore esempio, la Beat Generation.

E ora quattro risposte veloci a quattro domande plausibili.

Per quanto e da quando? 

Sono arrivata una settimana fa, quindi l’8 marzo e riparto il 25 maggio; quindi per ora staro’ qui tre mesi.

Perché? 

Perchè no? mi dico; se non lo faccio ora quando mi ricapita. Diciamo che la mia vita privata mi ha portato a fare questa scelta. Credo fosse da cogliere al volo. E così ho fatto.

Come? 

Con tantissima voglia di assorbire ogni minuscola informazione utile al mio lavoro. Vorrei tornare a casa con molti spunti, idee, con un inglese migliorato e con un valore aggiunto personale. Quindi fondamentalmente, sono una spugna pronta ad assorbire.

Cosa cambia? 

Dal punto di vista lavorativo, non molto in effetti. 

Il mio lavoro va avanti e sono sempre qui: le mie creazioni proseguono, la collezione corrente sta andando bene, ci sono nuovi di punti vendita in arrivo, collaborazioni che nascono... .

 In piu' c'è da dire che Internet ha davvero accorciato le distanze e quindi posso gestire tutto anche da qui, per questi tre mesi. Poi a casa ho un paio di persone d’oro che mi aiutano a portare avanti spedizioni, ordini e contatti. 

Detto cio’ a partire da oggi raccogliero’ in queste pagine tutto quello che reputero’ interessante: dettagli, stili di vita, negozi imperdibili, oggetti, beading in USA, chicche...insomma tutto quanto! 

Siete pronti?

Allora intanto ecco a voi qualche foto delle casette che mi circondano. Per cominciare vi faccio respirare un po’ di “Victorian Atmosphere”. La zona residenziale in cui vivo a Berkeley è piena di queste piccole dimore da favola. Intendiamoci: tra questa non c’è casa mia.

Gustatevi questa prima raccolta di case locali e preparatevi perchè domani si parla di un “paradiso perlinesco” che ho scovato qui a Berkeley e che ovviamente ho già testato, ehm!

From where can I start?

The best thing would be starting from the beginning, but I guess it could be enough starting from where I’m now, also because the whole story it’s too much personal and it might be a little boring.

So well. Let’s get start!

Dear all,

starting from today, for a little, this blog will be dedicated to host a sort of travel diary: a collection of notes and ideas taken during these days far away from Italy.

And here I am, in Berkeley, California, very close to San Francisco, to better explain.

Maybe the most of you link it to the famous university, and so it is. Berkeley is one of the top ten universities in the USA.

But there's something more! Here are born some of the most significant protest movements in the name of speech freedom, in the name of women rights... .  Just to make an example, the "flower's sons" are Berkeley's sons. Maybe some of you remember Forest Gump and his Jenny that all white dressed joins to the pacifist protests of a group of students: yes, they were from Berkeley.

But this city is in an area of incredible cultural intensity: here, in San Francisco really, was born the Beat Generation, only to make another example.

And now four short answers to four possible questions:

For how long and from when?

 I’m arrived here one week ago, the 8th of march, and I will return in Italy the 25th of may, so I’ll stay here for 3 months more or less. Then I will see.

Why?

Why not? I say...if I don’t do it now when I can get it? I can say that my private life took me to this choise. I guess it was definitely to grab! An so I did.

How?

With a lot of curiosity and a great desire to take every single useful information for my job.

 I would like to return in Italy with a lot of new ideas, with a good English and with something more for my self in general.

So, at the end, I’m like a sponge ready to absorb.

What is going to change?

 Concerning my job, nothing is going to change. 

My job goes on normally and so I’m always here:  my creations proceed, the new collection is going on very well, there are several new retailers that are coming, new starting collaborations.

Furthermore I have to say that Internet has cutted the distances and thanks to it I can manage everything quite well also from here during these three months.

Then I have some gold friends at home that are helping me to carry on the ships, the orders and al the contacts... .

Good. 

Finally, starting from today, I’ll collect, in these pages, all the stuff that I think it’s interesting: details, life style, interesting stores and boutiques, things, beading and everything else that I will find useful for our passion. 

Are you ready?

So in the mean time here you have some pictures of some houses surrounding me. I want to make you taste some “Victorian atmosphere”. The residential area where  I live in Berkeley is full of these small fairytales houses. Just to explain: my house is not in these...but I would like it.

Enjoy this first collection of local houses and be ready because tomorrow I will talk about a “beading paradise” that I’ve found here in Berkeley and that of course I’ve already explored!
